Why So Many Palestinian Families Have Fled to Cairo
For many people watching the news, the focus has understandably been on Gaza. But beyond the headlines, another humanitarian crisis continues to unfold. Thousands of Palestinian families have fled the conflict and are now trying to rebuild their lives in Cairo, Egypt.
Although they have escaped the immediate dangers of war, life as a refugee brings a new set of challenges. Families who once had homes, jobs and established communities are now living with uncertainty, relying on humanitarian support to meet their most basic needs.
Leaving Everything Behind
No one chooses to leave their home unless they have no other option.
Many of the families who arrived in Cairo left with only a few belongings. Homes, businesses, schools and treasured possessions were left behind as they searched for safety. Parents were forced to make impossible decisions, prioritising the wellbeing of their children while leaving behind the lives they had spent years building.
For many, the emotional impact is just as significant as the physical loss. They have experienced conflict, displacement and the uncertainty of not knowing when - or if - they will ever be able to return home.
Why Cairo?
Egypt has become one of the main destinations for Palestinians who have managed to leave Gaza. Cairo provides access to hospitals, temporary accommodation and humanitarian organisations that are working to support displaced families.
However, reaching safety is only the beginning of a much longer journey.
Without stable incomes, many families struggle to afford rent, food, healthcare and other daily essentials. Parents are doing everything they can to provide for their children while adapting to an unfamiliar environment.
The Challenges They Face Every Day
Even after escaping conflict, many refugee families continue to face significant hardship.
Some of their greatest needs include:
Nutritious food for their families
Clean drinking water
Baby essentials such as nappies, formula and wipes
Hygiene products
Medical care and medication
Temporary accommodation
Warm clothing and bedding
Household essentials to start again
Everyday items that many of us take for granted can make an enormous difference to a family trying to rebuild their lives.
How Alianah Is Helping
At Alianah, we believe our responsibility does not end when the news cycle moves on.
Our team is preparing a humanitarian aid container that will be loaded in Leicester before making its journey to Cairo. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, the container will be filled with vital supplies that families urgently need.
These include:
Rice
Flour
Cooking oil
Lentils
Pasta
Tinned food
Baby wipes
Nappies
Toiletries
Hygiene products
Blankets
Medical supplies and other essential items
Working alongside trusted local partners, these supplies will be distributed directly to displaced Palestinian families living in and around Cairo.
How You Can Help
There are two simple ways you can make a difference.
Collect an Aid Box
You can collect an Alianah aid box, fill it with essential items and return it to us ready to be loaded into the container. It’s a practical way for families, schools, workplaces and community groups to come together and support those in need.
Donate Towards Essential Supplies
If you’re unable to fill a box yourself, you can still make a meaningful impact by donating towards the appeal. Every contribution helps us purchase food, baby items, hygiene products and other essentials to maximise the amount of aid we can send.
No donation is too small. Every item placed into the container represents hope for a family who has already endured so much.
Together, We Can Make a Difference
Thousands of Palestinian families are trying to rebuild their lives after being forced to flee their homes. While we cannot undo what they have experienced, we can stand beside them during one of the most difficult periods of their lives.
With your support, Alianah can continue delivering practical aid, restoring dignity and reminding these families that they have not been forgotten.
If you would like to collect an aid box or learn more about this appeal, please contact our team on 07399 923185.
Together, we can help fill a container with hope.
